How much does joining Lambeth Allies Programme cost?

In short - nothing! Taking part in the programme is 100% free thanks to funding from Lambeth council. Training and visual materials are all provided at zero charge.

We're not based in Lambeth, can take part?

Unfortunately not. The scheme is only open to organisations with premises in Lambeth. If you're unsure of the borough in which you operate, you can check here

Where does the LGBTQ+ awareness training happen?

Training takes place online via Zoom and in-person in Brixton-based offices. Participants are welcome to attend whichever type of session is most convenient.

What is the "code of conduct"?

Participants are asked to sign the Lambeth Allies Code of Conduct which features six basic pledges aimed at their customers and the general public: 1) respect your sexuality and gender, 2) use your chosen name and pronouns, 3) challenge discrimination and prejudice, 4) celebrate LGBTQ+ identities, 5) ensure a safe environment for all, 6) report hate crimes to the authorities.

These pledges aren't legally binding, but are nonetheless important in signifying an organisation's commitment to safeguarding LGBTQ+ people.

We're a gay bar / club / business. Can we benefit?

Yes! Many queer spaces are implicitly safer for LGBTQ+ people, but staff can still stand to benefit from the instructive aspects of the training such as learning about the Equalities Act. The public-facing materials pack can also help queer businesses send a clear message that they are open and safe for all queer people.

Why are you running this scheme?

Lambeth Council and LGBT HERO have been collaborating to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ people in Lambeth for years. In 2022 we conducted a survey of LGBTQ+ people in the borough and found that many respondents don't feel safe going about their lives in Lambeth. The Lambeth Allies Programme was created in direct response to these findings. Want to know more? Click here.
